Are You Living the AP Life?
Welcome to AP Biology at Whitehaven High School! Like all AP programs, AP Biology is a rigorous course taught in high school at a college or university level of instruction; the course content being comparable to that of a freshman college student majoring in the sciences. The program is fast-paced and follows the general guidelines established by The AP College Board. Specific topics and timelines are outlined in the AP Biology syllabus developed specifically for Whitehaven High School and approved by the AP College Board. We will communicate through this website, so familiarize yourself with it. Check for updates daily.
This course is taught using lectures, discussions, independent study, outside reading, investigations, and inquiry. Think of it as a marathon. You are the athlete, and I am your trainer & coach. It is rigorous, demanding, and requires a significant portion of your time starting NOW. AP Biology requires considerable reading, terminology, memorization, reasoning of concepts, and (most of all) personal motivation for scientific knowledge and inquiry. You must possess the capacity to follow a painstaking schedule, work independently, and collaborate with peers. You should have a good grasp of general biology, good writing skills, access to the internet, as well as the ability to think critically.
We use a college textbook, college level labs, and a comprehensive college curriculum. Therefore, the pace of this class is rapid; at times it will boggle your mind how quickly we move! It is important that you consistently keep up with the text reading, outside reading, class work, and lab assignments.
Class attendance is particularly important in AP Biology. Material is covered in much greater depth and detail than your honors biology course. We will discuss key concepts in class. Obviously, the tests will reflect those discussions. Tests are constructed in the format of the AP Biology exam. They will include both multiple choice, free-response questions and calculations. Excessive absences may jeopardize your chances for success in this course. I will inform you of scheduled lab days; every effort should be made to be present on those days. You MUST NOT fall behind. It is strongly recommended that you purchase an AP BIOLOGY EXAM REVIEW BOOK and a simple 4-8 function calculator with the square root key. You CAN NOT use a scientific calculator in class.
As noted in your SCS Advanced Placement Agreement, EVERYONE enrolled in AP class is EXPECTED to take the AP exam in May.
The summer assignment this year covers several chapters from Campbell’s AP Biology the 8th edition, a widely used text and reference source for college and university biology programs. You will also use other on-line resources. I will send the summer assignment and chapter notes. Read these chapters and articles carefully, answer the questions, and write the essay. This is not busy work and should be used as a jump-start to the upcoming school year. There are 50+ chapters in this text, so we must hit the ground running! You will be tested on the summer material during the first week of school, so study hard and learn this material well. If you have ANY difficulties with the concepts or questions, do not hesitate to contact me through the link below. Summer work is due by the scheduled due dates. Attach assignments through the portal below. Good luck on your “bioadventure!”
